International Medical Graduates

In order to practice medicine in the United States, you must have a medical license from the state in which you intend to practice. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States (or Canada) must comply with a laundry list of requirements, including educational, clinical, and practical aspects, in order to obtain a medical license from the State of California. An application for licensure in California must also be accompanied by English translations of any and all foreign documents. There are strict requirements for how the translations must be accomplished, and by whom, in order to satisfy the state’s requirements. In addition, an applicant will have to submit his or her fingerprints to be run through a nationwide database. For more on fingerprinting:

Medical Assistants

Medical assistants are unlicensed individuals who can perform basic, non-invasive, routine, technical support services to patients in a medical office or clinic setting. They may obtain “certified” status through private agencies approved by the Medical Board of California, and are likewise held to the standards of professionalism expected of other healthcare practitioners. Medical assistants can only act under the direct supervision of a licensed physician or surgeon who must be on the premises in order for the medical assistant to perform non-invasive support services. The only exception is outlined in California Business & Professions Code, §2069(a)(1) and Health & Safety Code §1204(a) and applies only to licensed “community clinics” or “free clinics.”

Midwives

Licensed midwives are individuals who have been licensed by the California Medical Board to practice midwifery. Licensure allows the midwife, under the supervision of a licensed and actively practicing physician and surgeon, to attend cases of “normal childbirth,” in a home, birthing clinic, or hospital environment. Another designation is that of a “certified nurse-midwife.” Licensed by the California Board of Registered Nursing, CNM’s are registered nurses who acquired extra training in the field of obstetrics and are certified by the American College of Nurse Midwives.
